Beginning Mosaic Making / Janeen Marie
July 20 & 21 — $150 (lab fee $12)
Dating back at least 4,000 years, mosaic art is thought to have originated in Mesopotamia. Artists use a variety of materials to make mosaic art, including glass, ceramic tiles, and stones. In modern times Mosaic art has becoming an art form of personal expression. It can range from whimsical to representational and abstract. In this weekend workshop you will learn the basic tools used to create contemporary mosaics. You will learn how to break tile and the difference in tile quality, compose a design, use adhesive, grout, then paint your mosaic grout if desired. With this basic understanding you can move in simple or complex directions, creating stepping stones, indoor wall pieces, tables, outdoor walkways, or wall murals.
Janeen Marie has been inspired by the creative process since the early 1970s, having an excellent art department in her Euless, Texas high school. She went on to major in Fiber Arts at Texas Women’s university, and was a jeweler in Taos New Mexico from the early 1990’s through 2001. Her first adventure in mosaic making was the front porch on her Taos house. In Hawaii, Mosaic murals became a feature of her retreat space covering whole walls of individual buildings. Currently she resides in both Hawaii and La Veta Colorado where she continues to paint, make jewelry and explore more complex mosaic murals.
